History

St. Stephen’s was established to fill the need created by Huntsville’s tremendous growth to the Southeast. The first service was held in August 1963 in an old farmhouse with six families attending. It was an exciting time of new beginnings, new people, new careers, new homes, with a young and enthusiastic vicar with new ideas for a church. Looking to the future, the parish of St. Stephen’s undertook an extensive building program in 1986. Our new outstanding facility completed, we responsed to the needs of our community by opening a quality infant care and Christian Child Development Center(CDC).In 2000, our growth supported the need for expansion and renovation of the sanctuary or nave – still in its original form. Our beautiful new sanctuary now has the capacity to accommodate up to 300 communicants, a columbarium and quiet room for private prayer or prayer for healing and a new pipe organ that allows us to truly “make a joyful noise unto the Lord!”

As our physical facility has expanded and evolved, so have our parish activities. Through the years, we have participated in many outreach projects as the need arose, developed a music program that makes room for a variety of talents, and continue to be blessed by a powerful healing ministry. We have, and continue to encourage, the development of a personal relationship with God.
